On the VIA ROMEA from Gotha to Würzburg
Pilgrimage of 2016
On Ascension Day, a group of pilgrims from Iceland, Norway and Germany made their way from Gotha to Würzburg. Overnight stays were spent in church community centres, in a gymnasium, in a garden house, in a barn, in a castle, in a city planning office, on a stage in an event hall and in the Kappele guesthouse in Würzburg, above the city. Many hosts already know the VIA ROMEA as a pilgrim path. The trail is signposted in this area with stickers or can be easily recognized by integration into the official road guidance system.
The group was invited to dinner with delicious Thuringian sausages, to guided tours of places and churches, houses or a Jewish cemetery with over 2100 gravestones. The participants received free admission to the swimming pool and a tasting of sausage specialities. There were explanations about the poet of the song “Do you know how many little stars there are?” and in countless conversations along the way, the pilgrims were given insights into the lives of local people.
