Pilgrimage 2022
“Pilgrims open horizons”
– Norway –

Theme for the walk: «The Church Bells along the Tunsbergsleden»

The theme for the walk in Norway is “The Church Bells along the Tunsbergleden”.

Every time we pass a church, the bells will ring for us. This reminds us of that we do not walk alone, but our steps, our breath and our pulse are part of our desire for peace, understanding and reconciliation across cultures, religions, languages and life experiences.
We are part of the world and the world is part of us.

Through five countries, the journey opens our inner horizon, so that we can be united in a common understanding that we are all part of a larger context. In the world today, it is more important than ever to be reminded of this. We are strong when we stand together in love, common understanding and insight. Together we can create a better world for us all and future generations.

For Whom the Bell Tolls,
by John Donne

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Notes on the pilgrimage

The Norwegian stage of POH follows the Tunsberg Path (Tunsbergleden) from Oslo to Larvik. During the walk we will have an accompanying car and luggage transport. The stage ends with a joint ferry trip from Larvik to Hirtshals in Denmark, where the Danes take over the staff. From there you can join the Danish pilgrim walk further, or e.g. participate in the Danes’ first day hike.

This is not a pre-paid package tour, but a hike for and by hikers. Locally known tour guides will participate as fellow hikers.

The hike is open to both long-distance hikers and day hikers (when registering, let us know if you want to participate as a long-distance hiker or as a day-hiker).

The pilgrim walk will follow the rhythm of the long-distance hikers. We, therefore, ask day-hikers to meet up 15 min before the walk starts the day they have signed up for.
